using library databases

hello.

welcome to the library database tutorial.

this tutorial will show you how to access the library databases at MHCC.

while this tutorial contains examples specific to MHCC, they can be applied to most college libraries. talk with your librarian or instructor if you have any questions.

this tutorial will show you how to use four of the most frequently used library databases, based on your information needs:

background information from encyclopedias and dictionaries (CredoReference)
scholarly articles from academic journals (Academic Search Complete)
articles from popular magazines and newspaper (Gale Popular Magazines)
editorial and opinion articles about frequently discussed topics (Opposing Viewpoints)

this tutorial consists of step-by-step instructions, followed by a video showing how those instructions are executed. if you want to use these databases, you will need your MyMHCC login and password or the credentials provided by your library or school.

looking for reference articles: CredoReference

go to www.mhcc.edu
hover over quick links. a menu will drop. click once the LIBRARY tab.
in the library home page, scroll down to the Article Databases & More section of the page. click once the Credo Reference link below the picture.
at the proxy page, enter your mt hood student id number as your Username and your MyMHCC password as your Password.
once in the credoReference page, type your keywords inside the search box. click search.
choose the article you want to read from the list by clicking its title.
to get the article, click Share at the top of the document, then enter your email address and your choice of citation.
to get the citation, click Citation at the top of the document, next to Share, and choose the citation style you need.

looking for peer reviewed articles from academic journals: Academic Search Complete

go to www.mhcc.edu
hover over quick links. a menu will drop. click once the LIBRARY tab.
in the library home page, scroll down to the Article Databases & More section of the page. click once the Academic Search Complete link below the picture.
at the proxy page, enter your mt hood student id number as your Username and your MyMHCC password as your Password.
once in the Academic Search Complete (EBSCO) page, type your keywords in the search fields.
select full-text articles, Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals, and a date range if needed.
click the search button.
choose the article you want to read from the list by clicking its title.
read the full article by clicking the available full text formats to the left of the screen.
to get the article, click the E-mail icon to the right of the screen, type your email address, and choose a style for your citation.
to get the citation, click the Cite icon to the right of the screen, scroll, find, copy and paste the citation you need.

looking for magazine and news articles: Gale Popular Magazines

go to www.mhcc.edu
hover over quick links. a menu will drop. click once the LIBRARY tab.
in the library home page, scroll down to the Article Databases & More section of the page. click once the Popular Magazines link below the picture.
at the proxy page, enter your mt hood student id number as your Username and your MyMHCC password as your Password.
at the Gale OneFile: Popular Magazines page, type your keywords in the search box. click search.
under SHOWING RESULTS FOR, click the Magazines link.
choose the article you like from the list by clicking its title
to get the article, click the Send to… icon at the top right. choose the email option, and fill and send the form
to get the citation. click the Cite icon at the top right, click and choose the right style, copy and paste.

looking for editorial and opinion articles on topics for debate: Opposing Viewpoints

go to www.mhcc.edu
hover over quick links. a menu will drop. click once the LIBRARY tab.
in the library home page, scroll down to the Article Databases & More section of the page. click once the Opposing Viewpoints link below the picture.
at the proxy page, enter your mt hood student id number as your Username and your MyMHCC password as your Password.
at the Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints, instead of using the search box, click the Browse Issues (lightbulb) icon at the top right.
pick one issue from the list by clicking it to see articles about it.
scroll down to see the articles.
choose an article by clicking its title link.
to get the article, click the Send to… icon at the top right. choose the email option, and fill and send the form.
to get the citation. click the Cite icon at the top right, click and choose the right style, copy and paste.
